Public Schools

A strong public school system where all students achieve success is the foundation of a dynamic community, and this region is no exception. Northwest Independent School District (NISD) is one of the most progressive school districts in the state where staff and community members are committed to excellence. Through dynamic partnerships, the communities and school district are preparing all students for a successful future. Northwest ISD serves the majority of the Northwest Metroport Chamber’s region. The Town of Northlake is served by both Northwest ISD and Argyle ISD, while the Town of Westlake is served by Northwest, Carroll and Keller school districts.

About Northwest ISD

Northwest Independent School District (NISD) operates 27 separate campuses, spanning parts of three counties (Denton, Tarrant and Wise) and 14 municipalities. This includes 17 elementary schools, five middle schools, two comprehensive high schools, an accelerated high school, a special programs center and a youth residential program. Northwest ISD is the second fastest growing school district in the state, and the staff is committed to preparing students to be future ready:

  • Ready for college
  • Ready for the global workplace
  • Ready for personal success

As a leader in public education, Northwest ISD has earned recognition in Texas and across the United States. Northwest ISD has been honored with the following:

  • Member of the Texas High Performance Consortium
  • 1 of 547 school districts in the nation to be named to the AP Honor Roll
  • Ranked seventh in the nation in large student population district category for the Digital School District Survey Award
  • 2014 Best Communities for Music Education for the sixth consecutive year

ERCM Consultants gives NISD high marks on national security audit with significant investments into school security. 17,000 students participated in a community service project. The Class of 2014 earned a total of more than $17.8 million in scholarships. 52 NISD students received an athletic scholarship during the 2013-2014 school year. Three NISD Destination Imagination teams competed in the Global Finals Tournament.

In 2012, the community approve a $255 million bond referendum. Funds have been allocated to construct a third comprehensive high school, V.R Eaton High School (opening in August 2015), and the district's sixth middle school. The 2012 bond program will also provide updates to technology, safety and security, program enhancements and classroom space for math, schience and environmental studies, facility enhancements and classroom additions to the Outdoor Learning Center, major building component replacements like HVAC systems, flooring and roofing, as well as building additions.

As a fast growth school district, Northwest ISD attracts approximately 1,400 new students and their families each year. This rapid growth is a result of several factors: strong communities; the number of active housing developments; the attractive lifestyle in the area made possible by the strong housing, retail and business opportunities; and a number of NISD's programs and initiatives, like:

  • Tablets for secondary students
  • Six Career academies for high school students (Beginning in August 2015, the Academy of Business Management and Entrepreneurship will be available for students.)
  • Highly-ranked athletics and fine arts programs
  • Higher test scores than state and national averages

Westlake Academy

An International Baccalaureate World School

The Town of Westlake is home to Westlake Academy, and received the first open enrollment charter ever awarded to a municipality. Today, the Westlake community is proud to own and operate one of the leading public charter schools in the State of Texas and the United States. Westlake Academy is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, which officially opened its doors and first welcomed students in 2003.

An Exemplary rated school by the Texas Education Agency and nationally ranked by US News & World Report, Newsweek, and the Washington Post, Westlake Academy was the fifth public school in the nation to offer all the IB Programs from kindergarten through high school.

The IB framework and curriculum, along with the Academy's small class sizes, and a nurturing campus of innovatively designed stone-clad buildings clustered around the crown of an oak-filled hill overlooking verdant pastures, continue to create a premier knowledge-based community that is truly unique.
